hm, that’s a very interesting angle.
i think to be an artist in general one has to have a sense of selfishness because what you do and what you create comes (or it should come, anyway) from yourself, your views on the world, your experiences and feelings. so, in that sense, yes, i think he’s selfish — i don’t think he’s become selfish in recent years, though, it was already there. every decision made by HIM was to benefit himself (let’s leave the other guys out of this for a moment, since HIM is 99% Ville), from changing their music style with every album, to paying their first tour in England from their own pockets, to making the Screamworks tour as short as it was. what i think is happening is that there is less faking nowadays, perhaps because of his age, or the sobriety. Deep Shadows, for example, though a big commercial success, was a failure to him, because it was an album whose sound was completely modified by the record company (you may notice that there hasn’t been a song from that album played live in a while. it’s not coincidence.), and yet there wasn’t much complaining about it from Ville, at least not with hard terms such as “failure”. but with Screamworks (and Venus Doom, even), he used that very term several times.
so, in a nutshell, no, i don’t think he’s become selfish, i think he always was. as far as HIM is concerned, anyway, no one can really tell in regards to his personal life.
